I live in La Carolina, Jaén, Spain, which is a city on the Southern slope of Sierra
Morena, and South of The Passage of Despeñaperros.
It has a population of 15.198 people. It´s one of the biggest cities in Jaén , and it is 66
Km from Jaén.
Carlos III founded La Carolina in 1767.I think it´s the newest town in the
province of Jaén. It´s one of the cleanest citiest I´ve ever seen, and It´s great
for walking because it´s very flat. It´s flatter than other cities .It´s like a
chessboard.
The city shows paralled and perpendicular streets. There are different kinds of
squares: .circle, octogonal, semicircle, rectangular and square squares.
The best monumentsof the city are:
- The Palace of the Intendant Olavid.
- The Church of The Inmaculate Conception.
-The Jail.
-The Torres de La Aduana ( customs towers?)
-The Pylons Foundation.
-The Monument to St John of the Cross.
-TheMonument to Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
-The Archaelogical Museum.
-The Despeñaperros Nature Reserve.
-The Natural Park Sierra of Andujar .
La Carolina has a Mediterranean climate. The weather in autumn and spring is
rainy and windy .The summer is very hot.
La Carolina is an industrial city. It´s famous for pickled partridge, partridge paté
( I like it very much!) , olive oil, wild meat, several soups, game meat, rabbit, desserts
like bacon from heaven, rice pudding... .
The biggest tourist attraction in La Carolina is probably the Carnaval.La
Carolina is the most carnaval (carnavalera) town in the province of Jaén.
Everybody goes out in the street wearing a fancy dress .
Groups of people called "chirigotas" sing everywhere.
There are some holidays too:
-Saint John of the Cross.: 24 November
-The fair: 11 to 15 May: It´s very funny. Everybody spends most of the day
in the street dancing, eating and laughing .A lot of people ride horses in the
streets.(I like it a lot , too).
-The Celebration of the Foundation: 1 to 5 June.
I think the best things about La Carolina is itself .It´s a village not as big
as Jaén, It´s quieter and safer than a big town. But I don´t like living here
a long time; I prefer to live in Jaén.
